MARINA CIGLAR
here - there

14.4. - 11.5.2007

Marina Ciglar, born in Zagreb, Croatia, grew up in Sweden and now lives in Helsinki, Finland. In the early 90’s she studied at the Nordic Art School in Kokkola, and later  continued to the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. She works with various forms and different materials depending on the type of the project; be it installation, performance, photography, embrodery or text.  The final product reaches the public through different forms:  exhibitions at galleries, magazine articles, readings, or participation in performance festivals. Ciglar is one of the founding members of the artist initiative Gallery Huuto in Helsinki where she has initiated, organized and accomplished a variety of different projects such as the now ongoing TextKonst (TextArt). She has also curated exhibitions for Gallery Huuto. For several years she has been cooperating with poet Helena Eriksson from Sweden and this spring Marina Ciglar publishes a book together with Swedish writer Stefan Hammarén.

 here – there

Does surveillance bring to the fore the absolute vulnerability in a society where everybody is being watched, controlled and protected? Is order transmitted through social security numbers, identification documents, passports, cctv-cameras, police, security police, specially trained police, the military, boarder control, guards, inspectors, media, the church, morals, citizens, neighbours, acquaintances, friends, loved ones, family, parents and children

 Who keeps watch?

Who supervises?

Who controls and who is being controlled?

Who protects or is being protected?

From what and by whom?

What are the consequences of surveillance?

How is our understandning of reality affected by surveillance and being watched?

How does the technical equipment influence our view of the world? With machines, cameras, monitors and virtual reality? What happens to our sense of space? What happens to our sense of time? What does “here” mean? What does “there” mean?

 Who is the other person?

How does the presence of a human being influence the activities of another? What significance does the direction of our choices have for our sense of language and sense of meaning?

What happens to the one who falls outside of the protection?

 no one(‘s) someone(‘s) someone else(‘s)  somewhere else
